When I heard the term rhetoric, I thought it was somewhat like asking a rhetorical question. Rhetoric is the use of certain language devises to, in my case, pursuade someone to agree or find enjoyment in my writing. Rhetoric is a structure with three main skyscrapers. I measure each with how much effectiveness one can conduct.
The very highest skyscraper is logos. Logos is the presence of logic and clear information that creats a more believable state of answer for whoever I speak to. Logic, for me, is the tallest structure because if you can be logical, you seem smarter. The second is ethos. Ethos is the credibility of myself or whoever is speaking. This is important because if I were to hear a speech from someone that clearly had no education or knowledge in the feild they were talking about, then I would definitely not listen to him or her. The third structure pathos. I call this the pity card. Why? Because of how one uses it. Pathos is when you add in emotion, in most cases sadness, to influence the audiences mind. Basically, the pathos card is when you act sad, in most cases, so that the audience pities you and goes towards your side more. A perfect example is the presidential campaigns of, both, Obama and McCain.
There is a strong use of rhetoric in the army, marines , navy, national security, and all other kinds of military in the America. How does the military advertise themselves? The main rhetoric used military advertisements are pathos. They have this stunning feature of how you will look if you join the army. This inspirational feeling you get whenever you look at the ads from the military. The navy made a commercial with a man climbing up a cliff with no strings attached. He struggles to get to the top, sweating feircely, trying to get to his goal. He gets on top and his clothes changes into the clothes of a Navy. You tend to feel a strong emotion of inspiration when you look at it. These advertisement capture the attention of the audience and influences their thoughts into joinging the Navy.
The military also uses Ethos. Ethos is the credibility of the speaker. What the advertisements of the military does is, they tell you that if you join the army you join the army then your credibility will increase. Now if you have a high credibility level then job offers and money will increase for that person.
Logos is used in the military ads by them explaining to the audience that if you join the army or any military force, you get more job offers. Logos, like explained on the top parapgraph, is whn you use logic and information to pursuade the audience. The military does this by showing you the amount of money you will get. They give you certain reasons that will benifit you to join the military.

Nicely put. It's phrases like that, followed with solid evidence that can turn a 4 into a 5.
I really like your introduction. I never really thought of the three appeals in that sense. I also though it was a bit funny how you called pathos the pity card. This was a very clear and thorough blog. Good job.
Gary.
Steve,
can you find other examples of logos, ethos, and pathos? Instead of saying that Mc Cain's and Obama's speech uses pathos show them. for example, edwin Garcia's blog has an example from Mc Cain's speech, you should do the same thing.
overall, your examples were really good. i thought that hte examples that you mentioned were good good because they were from the real world and they were solid.
